CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

The Dorval Potters’ Guild offers classes in both wheelwork and hand-building techniques. Classes are generally offered in the daytime and evenings on various days of the week - in Fall, Winter, Spring and, occasionally, Summer sessions.

ADULT CLASSES

Beginner Wheel

  • Wheel I (beginner)
  • Wheel I.5 (Beginner / Intermediate)

These classes focus on developing proper habits in the studio from the very beginning. Basic techniques are introduced to allow the student to prepare the clay, set up, center and produce basic shapes. This is followed by learning how to tool and finish the pieces.

Intermediate Wheel

  • Wheel II (Intermediate/ Advanced)

This class focuses on specific shapes and challenges the student to perform like a production potter. Goals are set with specific weights of clay and individuals are prompted to achieve these precise demands.

Handbuilding

  • Handbuilding (Beginner/Intermediate)

This class is tailored for the handbuilder and accommodates beginner to more advanced students. Instruction focuses on pinch pots, coil building, and slab technique. The instructor also covers finishing and glazing techniques.

TEEN CLASSES

  • Wheel Throwing for Teens (12 to 16 years)

This class focuses on basic techniques to allow the student to prepare the clay, set up, center and produce basic shapes. This is followed by learning how to tool and finish the pieces.

CHILDREN’s CLASSES

  •  Intro to Handbuilding for Children (6 to 11 yrs)

This class is offered as an artistic opportunity for children to explore another medium of expression, to encourage them to experiment and have fun. Projects are realized through various handbuilding techniques.
